The box fan on the outside helps to draw out the air flow, and the filters keep the fan from getting gunked up with paint dust. Then I taped the remaining exposed areas to get a tight fit. I also carved out space along the back of my spray booth for my filters.
Below is a rough list of materials I put into this project. I had the tape, 2x4s, pine and screws on hand but added them since not everyone may have that on hand. The above steps are sure to help you put together a temporary paint booth so you can paint at home. If you follow the above steps, you should be able to get the quality results you are looking to achieve.
Choosing A Blower For The Hobby Spray Booth
Be aware of any HOA or zoning rules in your area about painting at home. The last thing you want to see is a town official pulling up because your neighbor complained about paint fumes coming from your garage. Don’t cheap-out when it comes to bodywork and paint products. You don’t have to use the most expensive products, but do the research and find good-quality products to use. Your paintjob is only as good as the products used.

A quick solution was to take down the curtain wall on the side of the garage that had the toolboxes and work bench, leaving the plastic hanging on the ceiling and the other three sides. Once the artwork was complete, it was easy to hang up a new curtain wall on that one side and clearcoat over the artwork, finishing the paint process. It can’t be stressed enough that you need to start off with a clean shop, but why clean it, only to cover all that neatness with bodywork and paint dust? Starting with a clean shop makes it easier to keep it clean throughout the process. You should clean the shop every day, but because you’re only cleaning up after that day’s work, the cleaning is easier and goes faster.
This homemade paint booth is easy to build, inexpensive and versatile.
Thank you for your prompt response, and I wish you well in the future. It is critical that you use a spray booth to paint the interior of a spray booth every day, regardless of how much paint you use. Spray booths are not only intended to protect your employees from fires, but they are also intended to protect those who work outside the area. The insurance value of a car will change depending on the custom paint job that has been installed.
I then tape the filters in place from the outside. This frame was hung from that PVC frame via a small bit of chain and some ‘S’ hooks. From here, I needed to think about ventilation and air flow. I have the garage door to help let in fresh air, but I also added fans to help with the circulation of the air flow. To build your own paint booth, you can get tips on how to do so online from hundreds of websites and discussion boards. The only two methods are those that are overly common and those that are not.
Square To Round Fan Adapter
This 1967 Firebird was not painted in a professional paint booth. Below we highlighted some benefits of the hobby spray booth we created. My shop is in a multi-tenant space, but I don’t have any issues with fumes. It’s a commercial space, so I’m surrounded by a lot of industrial types of businesses. And I have a huge garage door that opens up as well. Total setup time for this project is about 1 hour, including setting up the HVLP gun.

A paint booth can help you create clean and smooth paint jobs for your projects without getting paint all over everything. To build a booth in your garage, try creating a frame out of PVC pipe, plastic sheeting, and duct tape. You'll also need a box fan and filters for ventilation. With this simple setup, you can create a booth that will handle spray paint cans and guns.
I needed something that could contain the overspray, which also meant that I needed a “roof” of some sort to hold everything in. This is where an outdoor canopy comes into the picture. I suggest buying one with straight legs vs. angled ones, as it’s easier to add the plastic sheeting to a straight structure vs. an angled one (I’m speaking from personal experience here).

View the below how-to video for a full walkthrough of how to set up your DIY HVLP spray booth using the products we’ve covered above. With this guide, you don’t need a ton of resources or space to be able create a DIY HVLP spray booth to varnish your prints at home. Catalyzed paint (for example, 2-component car paint) heats up as it cures and may cause your filters to self ignite and catch on fire. Once you're done painting, remove the used filters and submerge them in water to reduce the risk of fire. Do not leave filters with wet paint on them unattended. If this project seems too hard, try mounting rolls of plastic from the ceiling on hooks.
The higher the ML count, the thicker the sheeting, so I would recommend around 4-6 ML – it’s a solid thickness that will make a durable barrier. You’ll need enough for three sides of the canopy. The good news is that I have a great fresh air source with the door.

A spray booth needs ventilation to remove fumes and overspray from the air. Without proper ventilation, these fumes can build up and cause health problems. To ventilate a spray booth, you need a fan, an exhaust duct, and a fresh air intake duct. The fans should be powerful enough to move the air through the booth at a rate of 1 CFM per square foot of booth area.
In most cases, if the fan is running before vapor is introduced, the concentration of vapor will be diluted and less than its LEL. When we built our spray booth we created our own square to round adapter. People started asking us where to get an adapter, so we started looking for an adapter that would work. After much research we came to the conclusion that there were no adapters commercially available that would properly transition from the square flange of the blower to a round duct outlet. This is when we realized that we could add value if we made this adapter commercially available. Choose the type of wood you prefer, follow the instructions, and start building your spray booth now.

This is one of the most frequently asked questions I get directed at me; particular from new customers whom are setting up a business for the first time and are quite restricted by budget.
